The 19th century brought new scientific knowledge that led to improved conditions of hygiene in urban areas and, as a result, improved control over epidemics. Hygienic awareness was still however not what it is today.
Hats were worn as fashion accessories. Several models existed: top hats, shakos, bicornes, bowlers, plume hats, straw hats… The sailors are wearing red Phrygian caps. There are a total of 89 hats in the painting.
Introduced by the British in the 18th century, the Menorcan breed of chicken stands out for its shiny greenish-black plumage, red comb and white earlobes.
The Iberian black pig already existed in Menorca. The Hampshire pig was introduced by the British in the 18th century and is currently valued for production of local sobrassada sausage.
During the first years of the 19th century, the use of long trousers grew widespread. Some models included a section of material with two buttons that opened at the rear for one to answer the nature’s call.
The press was used to squeeze the pomace –the remains of grape skins, pulp, seeds and stems- to extract juice for wine production.
The artist’s pentimento: the alteration of details or areas of paintings was common, as seen in the change in size of the jar.
The balcony of the old Dutch consulate included an enclosing wall covered with broken glass; an effective method to keep unwanted intruders out of the building.
Women’s dresses continually evolved. Between 1820 and 1840, their shape was characterised by a high waistline, broad skirts and puffy sleeves, known as “jamón” (ham) or “pierna de cordero” (leg of lamb).
Dinghy-type vessels with a flat stern were used for fishing or coastal trade. The middle boat is a tender for a felucca-type vessel.
